Mulan

To practice I decided to draw from Mulan. The style that is used is very basic with very few lines. it looks easy and simple. But I found that because there are so few lines it's very important that they are just right! It took me some getting used to. Also, I wanted to draw the men, not the pretty young faces. Those I can draw easily in my own style, but I wanted to practice something I can't draw well.

Surviving - inked

Okay, I'm not so sure about how I inked her. I made a lot of mistakes and I tried to vary in line thickness, but somehow it didn't turn out the way I wanted. Of course, this is the first mayor project that I inked, so it would be weird if it all went perfect. I now just hope the water colour will make me feel better about this picture.

The plan was to practice inking an image and then painting it. But after spending way too much time on this sketch I'm afraid I will ruin it... So I scanned it first. ^^

Nostalgic monsters

Dark Crystal is from my youth. I grew up fearing the Garthim and the evil Skeksis. These are sketches from the manga "Legends of the Dark Crystal". The top right monster is actually cattle btw ^^

Below that you have the "stupid stupid ratcreatures!" scene from Bone. It's on the first page I ever saw of the series and it still cracks me up.

French and Japanese monsters

Okay, technically those birds from "De Hoorn van Ramor" are not monsters, but they're really creepy none the less. When I was drawing from the book I have I suddenly realised that this comic was drawn when I was just 2 or 3 years old...

The Monsters below are from the magnificent series "Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind".

Divers monsters

You can have monsters in all shapes and sizes. With big teeth, in environmental suite or a centipede, ant-eater, turtle kinda crossover?

Medusa (small dragon/bat version) from King of Thorns 1

Lots of "King" in the names of these books... Anyway! I like the monsters in King of Thorns. There were a lot more, so maybe I'll draw a few from the later books as well.

Monsters

I was rereading Alim the Tanner and was again impressed by the art. This time I especially noticed the magnificent wildlife and even the way normal animals are depicted. I know I'm never any good with scary creatures... So for the next few days I'm practicing and drawing monsters from all kinds of comics and manga.
