Of teapots and coasters

Yesterday I didn't have a chance to post, so today I'm posting two sketches :)

Both of them are with reference. The pencil sketch lion's head is a detail on an old wooden box with wooden coasters. The other is a pen sketch of my teapot, also an old thing. I tried to do shadowing in two different ways, but I'm too used to pencils... the pen sketch is not very good. There is a line extra that really bugs me, but I stopped myself from erasing it in Photoshop. It's not as if this sketch is supposed to be perfect.

Okay, Today a friend and I both ranted about how we should draw/write more every day instead of playing games, watching anime or reading books (all of which get in the way of drawing). So I suggested to make a pact: we will both draw or write something every day, "just for fun".

Even though today I don't have much time, I'm sure there will be more days like this. So I'm starting with this little silly sketch page. I promise to come up with better things on other days. Just as long as I keep drawing I'm sure it will get better :)

Monotyping experiments

At the art academy I've discovered an interesting technique called monotyping. I've been experimenting with it and especially when I sketch with it so I like the results.

To the top one I added some colour with the computer, but the other two I plan to colour/add shade and such with water colour paint.

Flatfish skull and calcaneus drawings

These are the two version I made for an illustration assignment I have just finished for the book "Evolutie op het strand" (Evolution on the beach) by Jos van den Broek. The sketched version wasn't bad, but he's probably going to use the inked version, since it's more in style with the other illustrations I made for him (like the three calcaneus drawings below)

I really love making illustrations like this. Also trying new things is great too. Like the infographics about the weak spots in the leg of running humans that I made for this book as well (can be seen at my portfolio)

Winter go

Between Christmas and New year's Eve I went to Winter go. A time to play lots of go (a wonderful thinking game), play other games, make forest walks, warm up by the fire place and have great conversations till deep in the night.

I also drew a lot of pictures in between. Here are a few:

Marieke, the woman from whom I borrowed the lovely indian ink pen that I used to make these pictures. Too bad I can't show her lovely blue tufts of hair.

Roel reading a newspaper near the fireplace. I love the candeleer on the mantel, though the fox turned out horribly wrong *is ashamed*.

Pepijn and Willem playing a game of go (near the fireplace as well). Pepijn is bending forwards and is looking really serious. I really wish I could have had the time to make a proper portrait of him.

After being in the background for so many times the fireplace dragon demanded to be in the foreground and I happily obliged.

The Miraculous Fish Catch

The title is what my teacher said when he saw what I was working on. But the truth is that I made this just to see how these colours would work together. The pink is much brighter in real life, for some reason the scanner just won't catch it and photoshop can't bring it back.

But it's an interesting experiment none the less. If only to see how things can look different in real life then on screen.

Painting the working human

Assignment: Paint the working human and take your fellow painters as example.

These are some of the quick paintings I made. I wanted to try and make it almost abstract, since I tend to work real literal. As you can see I didn't really succeed. Though the first one is almost there, I just couldn't resist clarifying the characters in the print I made of the first one.

Look at the nice effects of paint being squashed... It's like it's made of branches and such now:

Silly Photoshop homework

One of my classes at the art academy is digital techniques. At the moment, we're learning how to use photoshop. Our homework was to take a photo of ourselves and paste our image onto a new background with the help of the masking tool. I've never used the masking tool (this way), so I'm rather proud of the result. I added a shadow for good measure too ^^

I realised the shading on me is from the wrong side, so I mirrored my mini-me and switched her to the other side ot the mushroom.

24-hour comic - When Time stood still...

I did the 24 hour comic challenge last weekend in the comicmuseum in Groningen with a group of comic artists. I had a great time, even though I didn't get to 24 pages (ran out of time at 20)
I'm going to finish the story and ink the pages I had to leave in sketch. I might even colour it all. I'll post (or link to) the new pages on this blog.

self portrait in a window

Hello!
I've started a part time study Graphic Design and I thought it might be fun to show some of the things I've been making for the academy:

The assigment for this one was: "make a self portrait from the reflection in the window. I drew my reflection, but since the light came from behind my face and such can't be seen and instead I saw the tree and parked cars beneath is in my place ^^. I like that part of it. But the rest is too much detail perhaps. I'm planning on making a new one with just a part of the silhouet and only a bit background.

Oh, and I thought the painting looked a bit bland as it is now, so I upped the saturation in the scan to see what it would look like with some more colour:

I think this looks much nicer. Even though no one's guess it's a reflection this way, but that's not so bad.

Practice with light and shadow. I'm not too sure about it, but some people were quite positive, so I guess it's okay. Maybe it's because I know what the original looked like...

Back in the Netherlands

Back in the Netherlands I'm starting to try out some new things. Someone at a forum mentioned that my sketches seem to be focused on lines and that I might try out some colorsketches without using lines first.

I'm always up for a challenge so here's one of the colorsketches I made to practice with acrylics. so no lines were used, just shapes. But a candle like this is so simple it could hardly go wrong there.

My apologies for the scan btw: I made this in my sketchbook, and I forgot to erase the bending of the page before uploading this picture. But since it's just a random sketch it doesn't really matter I guess.

Piece of wood

Piece of wood I thought was fascinating. I love the shape and the small pieces of bark that still clung to it. I don't know from which tree it was. I picked it up on the bibbelmum track between Long Point and Mount Claire, right where the track leaves the dunes and its shrubs behind and enters the forrest.

Skin scales

For the mother of a friend I got some of these crocodile skin scales to draw. I never knew those creatures had scales like this. But she said she found them (and a whole bottle full of siblings) on the rotted carcass of a crocodile... It doesn't sound very appetizing, does it? But they were clean now and interesting to sketch.

Grass tree

These "trees" are really amazing. Instead of leaves they have grass and their flower looks like the big stick you see in my drawing. They flower after they've been burned by a mild fire (after a very hot fire they might also flower, if they're still there ^^)

Pink mushroom

Yes, this mushroom was really pink. I was making photos of mushrooms for some friends and I found this one while my card was full. But I thought it a shame to not record this one in some way. Luckily I had my paintset with me.

Banksia nut

While I was in Australia I was really struck by how different the trees and plants looked. This banksia nut is probably nothing special to australians. Like chestnuts, or acorns are nothing really special to europeans. Just something that you always see lying on the ground during a certain time of the year, or something that you used to make spiderwebs with.

But! I've heard that there is an australian childrens book that has main characters that look like nuts and berries and stuf. The main characters are two cute honkey nuts (from the karri trees) and the bad guy is figured on the banksia nut!

Poor banksia nut, I don't think it looks like an evil banksia man...

Paper bark

I just love the twisty shapes of these south west Australian paper bark trees. They're a swamp species and are tolerant to high water levels. The one that I pen sketched here stand on the water side of the Walpole inlet, where part of the Bibbulmun runs past.

Colorful coral

This image was scanned from my sketch book / diary that I kept during my travel to Australia. This is a water colour sketch of a piece of coral that a friend borrowed to me for just that purpose.
Pieces like this can occasionally be found on beaches, so it doesn't really harm the reefs to pick up things like this. But it's still not quite legal to have, or at least to take across the border, I heard. I guess there's no way to tell the difference between a found piece and a piece that was broken of.
Luckily there are no laws saying I can't make a picture of it.

Rock Lobster

I made this drawing standing in front of an aquarium with a dozen or so of these creatures. And since they are appearently sensitive to light, there had been very sparce with the lamps and this is essentially a "blind pen sketch". It gives it a bit of freedom.
